I have tried a number of ways to get from audio to text via digital recorders, transcribing software, etc. The little Anker Soundcore audio recorder may well be the easiest, but to get full functionality requires a subscription which the other methods did not. The device does involve using your smartphone via the Soundcore app, thus tethering the device to your phone. My initial take is that the battery life, the use of magnets to hold the microphone onto clothing and to the charging base, the light weight (the microphone weighs 0.4 oz. and the charging base 1.3 oz), the simple controls for the microphone, and the accuracy of the transcription make the device a winner. Although one might ask if the app could simply use the smartphone microphone and avoid the extra hardware entirely, yet the tiny microphone does have some advantages in terms of where you can locate it and the audio quality.Setup involves installing the app, signing up for an account, verifying your email, pairing the device, and updating the firmware. The process does not take long, but the packaging directs you to a QR code for app download which appeared would work, but as an Android user, I prefer to use Google Play and searched for Soundcore, found the app and installed it. The next part of the process involved creating a username and password including a verification email and code entry. Once actually in the app, you search for the device which it found quickly and connect it. After the connection, it prompted me to allow a firmware update to the device. The update was straightforward and once that had been done, the app prompts you to accept the six months of free PRO level service, which involves authorizing (on Android) your payment through Google after the first six months. The cost is actually $15.99 per month or a bit of a discount if you move the payment period out to six months ($69.99). If you decide to change or cancel your subscription, you do that through your Google account, not with Anker/Soundcore.Basic use of the recorder involves tapping the record button to start or stop the recording and double tapping the body of the microphone to add a date/time stamp. The small booklet included in the box is not a manual, it has the QR code for the app, warranty information (it is 18 months), and safety information in a variety of languages. The actual instructions are on a flap inside the packaging.You can use the microphone while it is in the charging dock which extends the battery life from 8 hours to 32 hours. The charging dock can also be attached to a magsafe/magnetic phone or case and used while attached to the phone.The package includes the microphone, the dock, a USB A to USB C cable for charging, a cord that can be used as a lanyard for the microphone, and an adhesive metal ring if you don’t already have a magsafe phone or magnetic case.The Pro plan provides 1200 minutes of recording per month, moving to the Unlimited plan give you unlimited minutes, the Starter plan drops you to 300 minutes per month and does not include the AI features in the transcriptions for meetings, summarizing, and tailoring notes. The six-month trial on pro should allow you to figure out what features you need and use, along with how much recording time you will use.The recordings you make do get uploaded to the cloud (apparently AWS) where the transcriptions happen, but getting the transcriptions downloaded and sending them elsewhere is pretty simple and you can delete the recordings if you don’t need the audio files. The app allows you to synchronize your files with Norton backup, but indicates that synchronizing with several other apps including OneNote, OneDrive, and Google Drive will be available in the future. I have included photos of the device and accessories, plus screen captures from the app which may assist in evaluating if the device is a fit for you.On balance, this is a cleverly designed recorder and the transcription in the cloud works very well. You must accept the downside regarding the subscription costs for full functionality, but the free plan does provide the basics. The six months provided to use the Pro plan should allow enough time to make a value judgment on what will best fit your needs.

The package includes an adhesive steel ring you can attach to the back of your phone, allowing the dock to magnetically attach for convenient charging on the go.Recording & Transcription: Capable But LimitedThe device records and automatically stores recordings in the cloud though your phone where they can be transcribed. This does require you to install an app on your phone and it to be linked via Bluetooth. You are limited to 300 hours of transcription per month on the free plan. beyond that requires a paid subscription. The AI features that organize meeting transcriptions, notes, and summaries are also locked behind a paywall.Important note: The device is not discreet. A blinking light indicates when it's recording, so don't expect covert operation.My Security Concerns Here's my biggest reservation:Recordings are stored in the cloud on AWS. While the company touts their security and encryption, they hold the keys .. not you. This raises legitimate questions about how safe your recordings and transcriptions really are when entrusted to a third party. For sensitive conversations or confidential information, this cloud dependency is concerning.This is a well-designed recorder with excellent battery life and convenient features, but it falls short due to subscription requirements for full functionality, dloud dependency with no offline option, security concerns about third-party data storage.If you're comfortable with cloud storage and the subscription model works for your budget, this is a solid choice.
